(More customer reviews)I received this deep fat fryer by Bella Cucina for XMAS 09 and was extremely pleased. The first batch of fries were delicious. However on the 2nd day, halfway through the breaded and spiced chicken it quit. The lights went out on the fryer, no reset to push in etc, etc. There is not much I can't fix and without a receipt I couldn't return it. I took the plastic lid off the electrical portion and discovered that the little plastic safety knob was loose and the fryer wouldn't turn on as a result. If I depressed that the fryer turned on. But due to poor design or manufacturing it was a wonder that the fryer ever turned on. I haven't been able to repair it. My wife said buy another brand and leave it at that.
I dislike the promise being unfulfilled, but that's reality. Buy another brand. Amazon sells this one for 39.95. The one I had came from Macy's.

(More customer reviews)This seems to be a well made product, and if not for one tremendous flaw I could somewhat recommend it.

The manufacturer got a the hardware design and functionally right. The temperature readings are very accurate. The view-screen tilts for easy reading, even on pots with sloping sides. And having the 14 most common candy and oil temperatures stored in the unit for easy selection is a nice addition, unfortunately it's also the Maverick's Achilles heel.
Because if you ever want to cook something at a temperature 'other' than those 14 presets, you may as well use a cheap analog thermometer. Unlike any other digital thermometer I've ever used, the Maverick does not permit setting of custom temperature alarms. You'll either use their 14 alarm presets or nothing at all.
Certainly the unit will display whatever temperature it is currently reading, but so can any $3 analog candy thermometer. In my mind, the primary purpose of a digital thermometer is to alert a cook when a specific temperature is reached. Not allowing the cook to set alarms at their chosen temperatures is a ridiculous and fatal defect.

The unit does have some issues even aside from that major flaw. The 14 available temperatures are selected from an LCD display, unfortunately the text on the display is very tiny it's awfully difficult to read. I have good eyesight, those suffering even moderate nearsightedness will be unable to read this display unassisted. This tiny-text problem seems also to a consequence of those 14 presets. If this thermometer worked like most other digital thermometers, the display would be more than big enough show 3 digit temperatures in huge lettering. But those 14 presets have too much text to be displayed at anything other than a tiny size on the unit's screen.
This product also misses the mark in catering to the needs of cooks. In candy making, knowing when candy has dropped to a certain temperature is just as important as knowing the highest temperature reached. This unit has no function for setting alarms at cooling temperatures.
This product shares it's reason for failure with many other failed electronic products. It has good hardware but very poorly designed software (firmware). The fixes should be simple by software standards. The designers need to ditch 14 presets, allow setting of alarms for any user-defined high and low temperature, and increase the text size. Those few changes would turn this lemon into an amazing kitchen tool. But if it remains as it is, it will be just another piece of kitchen junk to clutter your drawer.

Not only can you use it as you would any other skillet -- I have used it to make baked potatoes; "baked" frozen entrees, and have found recipes for cakes, coffee cakes and even pizza. Can't wait to try all these new ideas. The kitchen doesn't get heated up in the summer, thus keeping the air conditioning from working hard. Some things take a little experimenting, but it all seems to work out in the end. Frozen products need to be watched the first time to make sure they are totally cooked. My only suggestion to West Bend would be to offer a grid to fit in the skillet. Great product -- great price!!

It frys evenly, even when it gets the flour at the bottom, and it is so easy to clean and use. I have given away my fancy ones for this down to earth "best of the best" fryers. Thank goodness I was able to find it on Amazon after the one I used for a zillion years lost most of its coating and I decided to retire it. It was still cooking even, though, just decided it was time for me to get a new one in case I couldn't find one in the future if it ever gave out!

King Kooker KK329 Cooking Oil Filter Pump Review

(More customer reviews)It's kind of a pain to empty used cooking oil, so I was excited to try this. The following aspects make it dissapointing:
* The motor is underpowered. It empties the oil slowly, and sometimes you have to turn it off and on several times before it "catches" and actually starts to move the oil.
* The food sediment in the oil sticks to and clogs the filter. To get it off you have to stop the motor, let the food bits fall off, and then start it again (which might or might not happen the first try). Maybe this happens with all oil filters, but no matter what it makes the experience with this one frustrating.
* It requires three D sized batteries. You're not supposed to leave batteries in things that you don't use frequently, so depending on how often you fry you might end up putting in and taking out the batteries every time you use it.
To be fair, even though it didn't live up to my expectations I still use this instead of just draining the oil through cheesecloth or something.

(More customer reviews)This fryer had everything I wanted: a nice basket you could let drain easily before removing the hot food, reasonable balance of capacity vs. oil usage, and the thermostat/timer combination proved quite versatile. And it worked acceptably for about six months. At first the main problem was the two-piece handle kept slipping apart, which got me burnt more than once. And then one day it just stopped working altogether. I believe may have been due to a problem with the odd power connector on the unit, which was troublesome from day one. You'll find multiple reports of the same issues on the very similar Euro-Pro F1042 Compact 2-Cup Stainless-Steel Deep Fryer and the Deni 9301 Mini 840-Watt 1-1/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Deep Fryer, both of which share several parts (including the power connector) with this model.

The glass cover of course can not be used when deep frying (won't fit over basket) although the photos suggest that the cover can be used while deep frying.
Otherwise I like it.

It arrived in 3 boxes within one The original manufacture box, inside another box then a box for that one. Ours arrived in great condition. BTW the red colour is a pleasent red not and orange red. I tested it for lead content with a home kit and it passed with flying colours. This has become our favorite pan, we are glad we ordered the one with the lid.
